Reactivating Blog

HELLO AGAIN!

I’m going to start posting to this thing more regularly. Here’s what’s been going on lately:

Began writing reviews for OnlineBookClub.org. So far, 1 has been published, one sent to the author privately for constructive criticism, and one pending publication. If you care to, you can see the published one at http://onlinebookclub.org/reviews/by-dickdatchery.html. So far they are unpaid assignments, but actual small amounts of money start coming as you become more senior. Extra spending money, si!

Lost 13 pounds, another 10 or 15 to go.

Progressing in piano playing (still low level though).

Began learning French, brushing up on Spanish, may also start on Italian. Duolingo is a great free language-learning platform!

Reading plan, 3 books at a time: 1) from Fadiman and Major’s Lifetime Reading Plan plus some extra math and science thrown in. This will hit the highlights of the “Western canon,” plus great works from India, China, and Japan; 2) random modern fiction or nonfiction (or earlier works not included in #1 above); and 3) whatever book I am currently reviewing. So right now, that means I am reading Gilgamesh, Thomas Pynchon’s Bleeding Edge, and a thriller about fighting terrorists in Pakistan.

Study List is Done

So, this is what I’ve been doing for the past week.  This list contains some of the most important literature, art, music, discoveries and inventions, architecture, and movies.  To satisfy my OCD, I put them in chronological order, but I won’t be constrained to a chronological approach as I experience and report on them.  The watchword will be variety.  I would love to get through all or most of the list, but it is very long, and I’ve had hints from my body lately that I may not be immortal . . . .  🙂

I am aware of biases in the list toward western as opposed to eastern art and literature, toward American and British works, toward rock, jazz, and classical over other types of music, and toward modern times.  However, I have attempted to include representative works from a broad range of times and places.

March 30, 2014-Introduction

Thanks to my decision to take an early retirement at age 53, I no longer have a place to go every day where I must do things other people want me to do until closing time.  This could be good–a lot more free time–but it could be bad if I I allow myself to drift into lethargic inaction with no purpose.  This blog will be a report on how I spend that precious free time and it will contain some of the results, such as photographs and written products.

My goals are to: 1) engage in an in-depth study of history, literature, and art; 2) write stories, novels, or nonfiction; 3) take up creative hobbies like playing the piano and photography; and 4) keep in good physical, mental, and spiritual condition.

Here’s how I envision it:
